THE SUPERFLAT MARKET’S RISKS AND POSSIBILITIES
As part of Christie’s talk series, prolific Japanese artist Takashi Murakami will be making a guest appearance lecture at the Convention and Exhibition Center in Hong Kong. The venue will have limited seating with registration online required and will feature Japanese dialect alongside English and Putonghua simultaneous translation.
“In Japan, it is very difficult for artists to grow and thrive. The reason lies in the country’s post-war tax system. Before WW II, a great number of our wealthy could be relied on as collectors of Japanese art but after the war, the powerful conglomerates were broken up and it became nearly impossible to retain expensive works for more than a generation. Foundations, as well, began to lose their merit and it became harder and harder for them to function. It was under these circumstances that Manga, Anime, Games and the entire Otaku world that surrounds them came to be.” - Takashi Murakami

MURAKAMI ANIMATION STUDIO COMING TO L.A.
Japanese artist Takashi Murakami is bringing his signature pop art to Los Angeles. Murakami announced that he plans to open his own animation studio in California next year where it will operate under Kaikai Kiki.
“Animation and film have always been among my greatest influences, ever since I first saw ‘Star Wars’ and Hayao Miyazaki’s films,” Murakami said in a statement. “This studio represents a great step in the evolution of Kaikai Kiki and gives me a closer proximity to the community of artists with whom I hope to collaborate as I continue my explorations of animated and live-action film.”
XLARGE x TAKASHI MURAKAMI WATCH
Looks like XLarge is hooking up with renown Japanese artist Takashi Murakami on a watch made by Citizen. The piece features a futuristic animated design, much like Murakami’s cartoony renditions while his artwork is the centerpiece showcased on the backing. Details are dim but it certainly looks like something to look forward to.

LV 5TH AVE. STORE DESIGN BY TAKASHI MURAKAMI
Louis Vuitton always manages to surprise us by taking whatever they do to the next level.
For their flagship store on 5th avenue in New York, Louis Vuitton covers the facade of the
building with Takashi Murakami’s signature multi-colored monogram print. The result is a
stunning branded landmark that no one can miss. Furthermore, this store features a “bag bar”
that is often seen at LV stores around the world but with moving parts. If you’re in New York,
it’s definitely worth a visit.
